MY JOURNEY SO FAR...

First Videos

Using the webcam on my 2019 Macbook, I recorded my first videos: uncut, unedited, and all shot in one take. This was my first experience with videomaking, where I tried to replicate my favorite content creators on Youtube at the time. It helped me develop a sense of storytelling and begin learning how to translate ideas into an interesting video...at least in the eyes of 10 year old me.

Steady Improvement

As I made more and more videos over the next five years, I began seeing gradual progression within my videos. Ranging from clearer ideas and stories, to higher production quality and attention to detail. I learned all of my video making skills during these years, especially because Covid-19 forced a strong bond between my laptop and I. Most days of lockdown would be spent thinking of ideas and making them into videos, aiming to improve with each video.

Discomfort Zone

In 2024, I grew interest in other aspects of video making, so I joined the Abingdon Film Unit, a film club in my school which introduced me to the more professional process of filmmaking: bigger cameras; detailed storyboards; planned shoot days; and complex editing software. Not only did this give me an opportunity to make my own short documentary about my favourite subject: football. But it also taught me the discipline and effectiveness of simple editing.

Where I Am Now

Since my first AFU documentary, I've worked on multiple different projects, varying in length, style and purpose. This includes working as a cinematographer for a short horror film, editing for two economics and politics podcasts, and producing a few small projects such as a Coca-Cola spec ad and an induction video for new Abingdon School students.

Outside of school, my internships with Touches Ltd, a post-production house in Hong Kong, and Moviola Pte Ltd, a production house in Singapore, have given me insight into different sides of the filmmaking process, teaching me how different teams approach their work and the importance of collaboration within the industry.

I've also begun photography and videography for my school's sports teams, specifically the football and rugby teams.

Up Next

I look to keep making small improvements, especially since getting my first camera. This includes improving my practical knowledge as well as learning to convey more emotion and depth behind the photos and videos I shoot. I'd also love to lean into fiction films further, especially in the directing department, as I've worked primarily on documentaries so far in my filmmaking journey. I think this is my next best step towards improving as a filmmaker, because exploring different genres and styles of film will challenge me to approach filmmaking from different perspectives, pushing me out of my comfort zone, which has always taught me something new.
